A new research study published by Conill reveals unexpected truths about the mood of Americans:
Fact: Immigration is not considered a major issue by either Hispanics or non-Hispanics.
Fact: More than half of both groups feel their concerns are not being addressed by elected officials.
Fact: Despite their concern regarding the upcoming presidential election, non-Hispanics are more likely than Hispanics to feel the country is too concerned with politics.
“America 2012: What Keeps Us Awake at Night and What Makes Us Dream in a Politically Charged Election Year” focuses on the concerns, aspirations and political leanings of all Americans. The first in a series of reports designed to help better understand Americans, the quantitative study shows unexpected similarities and contrasts between Hispanics and non-Hispanics. It analyzes perceptions across a variety of geographies and segments: Republicans, Democrats and Independents; gender and age cohorts; Influencers and non-Influencers. Read the rest of this entry »

The annual report, which breaks down media segments into five main categories, indicated the industry is currently in the midst of a revolution due to unprecedented rates of consumer technology adoption, platform convergence and increased access to analytics. Not only has the introduction and true embracement of cutting-edge gear, such as tablets and continuously-evolving mobile devices changed the very way consumers absorb media, but now more than ever trends are showing that users increasingly expect to interact with all content providers through multiple online and offline formats. Ninety-two percent of consumers around the world say they trust earned media, such as word-of-mouth and recommendations from friends and family, above all other forms of advertising—an increase of 18 percent since 2007, according to a new study from Nielsen. Online consumer reviews are the second most trusted form of advertising with 70 percent of global consumers surveyed online indicating they trust this platform, an increase of 15 percent in four years. Culture is context. That is, culture is that loose and vague collection of values, symbols, rituals, habits, style and attitudes that characterize and distinguish a group of people. The amorphous and hard-to-finger qualities that differentiate the U.S. context from, say, the Japanese or Eastern Europe or Malaysian contexts all become key in how new platforms find a place within people’s lives. SPEAKING two languages rather than just one has obvious practical benefits in an increasingly globalized world. But in recent years, scientists have begun to show that the advantages of bilingualism are even more fundamental than being able to converse with a wider range of people. Being bilingual, it turns out, makes you smarter. It can have a profound effect on your brain, improving cognitive skills not related to language and even shielding against dementia in old age. An idea is worth a thousand words. Advertising, marketing, and communication agencies know this better than anyone. Their job consists of selling creative ideas that help their clients increase sales. However, media agencies also need to promote themselves. In an environment rich with digital platforms and social networks, agencies can use self-promotional viral campaigns to position themselves in the competitive online universe. As we see every year, 2012 started with lots of predictions, resolutions and good intentions. The marketing industry is no exception, as we hear perspectives from many experts across different disciplines and specialties about what will and won’t happen in our industry. This is always fun reading and often inspires at least a few minutes of reflection. The challenge, however, is to put our new year’s resolutions into practice. As soon as we get back to our routine, making any significant change becomes increasingly difficult, and we settle for doing business as usual. Read the rest of this entry »

As an avid concertgoer, I can say that the difference between a good show and an awesome performance depends on the conversation between the fans and the stage. The closer you are to your idols, the more personal and intense the show gets. Similarly, a brand’s ability to deliver compelling messaging and achieve rock-star status depends on the conversation between the consumer and the brand. However, in today’s multicultural marketplace, proximity and volume alone no longer guarantee that everyone will hear a brand’s message. Read the rest of this entry »

With our national online data collected in 2011, students in the graduate Multicultural Marketing Communication course and I measured some key indicators of entertainment spending in the multicultural marketplace. We have known that Hispanics and other emerging minorities tend to watch more movies in theaters and also rent more to watch at home than non-Hispanic Whites . We have not known much about overall entertainment spending, videogame and music spending, however. Below I explore some of the trends available as reflected in our data.
