November 21, 2011- Ever wondered what makes Latinas so unique and memorable? With a majority bicultural-bilingual audience of women in the U.S., Latinas today display a unique fabric of traditional and conservative values combined with the spice of beauty and fearless attitude that make them stand out from the pack. This is why they are proud and no longer afraid to visibly share who they are and what they stand for in life, they are “Orgullosas”. Read the rest of this entry »

Two-thirds of online adults (66%) use social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, MySpace or LinkedIn. These internet users say that connections with family members and friends (both new and old) are a primary consideration in their adoption of social media tools. Roughly two thirds of social media users say that staying in touch with current friends and family members is a major reason they use these sites, while half say that connecting with old friends they’ve lost touch with is a major reason behind their use of these technologies. Blowing up multicultural silos seems to be the esprit du temps, or at least the theme of the last ANA Multicultural Marketing and Diversity Conference. Leverage your common multicultural insights across different consumer groups. Realize economies of scale. Develop marketing communications that appeal to multiple multicultural segments at the same time. Reflect in your organization the new mainstream and the demise of the so-called “general market.” Read the rest of this entry »

Companies that seek to build relationship with Hispanic, Asian and African-American consumers should take their multicultural budget out of a silo and push it out to all of the company’s business units. That’s what Walmart Stores has done and what its senior vice president of brand marketing and advertising, Tony Rogers, advised. Speaking Tuesday at the ANA Multicultural Marketing & Diversity Conference in Miami Beach, Rogers believes such actions will force behaviors throughout all of a company’s divisions to change for the better, with all on the same page with respect to understanding the multicultural consumer. Much has been written over the years about the Windy City’s status as America’s “Second City.” From the comedic antics of “SCTV” comedians to the great radio talents heard on such stations as WLS, WCFL, WLUP and B96, Chicago’s influence on the nation has indeed been large but secondary to The Big Apple, or L.A., or even Washington, Atlanta, or Miami. Many impressive gatherings of professionals and Hispanic market gurus take place almost monthly around the nation. From ANA meetings to AHAA, HPNG, Latinvision, Geoscape and many more, marketers wanting to congregate and dive deeper into the Hispanic Market have a wide range of options to sharpen their saw. However, is our message penetration other outer circles of non-believers and curious executives? While our Latino industry gatherings are fundamental to continue to foster collaboration, benchmarking and peer-to-peer networking, it is quite exciting to bump into unusual and non-Hispanic gatherings that recognize our market as a priority to highlight.
This is the case with The Luxury Marketing Council in New York City. The Luxury Marketing Council is a a business-building, revenue-generating organization, a community of CEOs and senior sales and marketing practitioners considered the global leader in the rapidly-growing arena of luxury marketing and the “Gold Standard” for the intelligent exploration of best marketing practices and trends in the luxury marketplace. With members such as Bentley Motors, Inc., Clarins, Tiffany & Co., Bergdorf Goodman, Cartier, Giorgio Armani Corp., Waldorf Astoria among many other prestigious brands and organizations, this month’s agenda focused on Latinos as a golden nugget for growth. Hispanics who live in the United States live in a heterogeneous cultural environment: they are surrounded both by the culture they or their relatives experienced in their country of origin and by mainstream American culture. Additionally, Hispanics who live in the United States may grow to feel a connection with people with different countries of origin within Latin America. This diverse experience exposes Hispanics in the United States to several reference groups. Read the rest of this entry »

When I was a junior in college I took a class called “Sexual Diversity and Social Change.” The class broke down gender identity and roles, challenging you to look at their social constructs and think about if (and how) the notion of gender could be organized differently.
In this small class of about 15 to 20 people, I was the minority, a one woman wolf-pack; I was the lone heterosexual. Gay, lesbian, bisexual — even a male-to-female-pre-op-transgender-lesbian — and me. A Miami Cubanita immigrating to an ivory tower, I had imagined a wide array of situations where I might feel like a minority; this scenario was nowhere among them. Read the rest of this entry »
