The U.S. Census Bureau released a set of estimates showing that 50.4 percent of our nation’s population younger than age 1 were minorities as of July 1, 2011. The proliferation of Hispanic online panels has ignited a debate around the efficacy of online research among Hispanics. In Q1 2012 Added Value Cheskin launched an investigation into this matter using several of the hundreds of Hispanic studies we have conducted in the past few years. All interviews collected were from a random selection of Hispanic sample. Respondents were post classified into the appropriate acculturation level based on several measures including language dominance, media consumption, proportion of life spent in the US and attitudes/ behaviors. As summer approaches, retailers are feeling the heat from volatile fuel prices. A study by BDO USA, LLP found that while the economy remains the top risk for the nation’s largest retailers, concerns over the cost of fuel prices outpaced unemployment for the first time since 2009. Of the 99 percent of retailers citing general economic conditions as a risk, 71 percent point to fuel prices as a primary reason, up from 58 percent last year. With tepid progress in job reports, 68 percent of retailers note lingering concerns over unemployment, but the risk is down from its peak in 2010 (70 percent). Read the rest of this entry »

Starcom USA and its multicultural agency Tapestry have finalized its first 2012-2013 Upfront deal with Univision Communications.
This is the largest single-agency Upfront deal ever conducted by Univision and will be the first to utilize a video neutral approach, incorporating all of Univision’s properties including two network broadcast networks, three rated cable channels, local TV and radio stations, and Univision’s online, mobile and social video destinations. A new research study published by Conill reveals unexpected truths about the mood of Americans:
Fact: Immigration is not considered a major issue by either Hispanics or non-Hispanics.
Fact: More than half of both groups feel their concerns are not being addressed by elected officials.

From Millenials to Boomers, males to females, and a variety of racial/ethnic groups, part two of Nielsen’s State of the Media: Advertising & Audiences Report presents an in-depth look at usage by demographic. According to Nielsen, white TV viewers use their DVR twice as much as any other group on a daily basis, yet Asians watch the most timeshifted content as a share of overall TV time. Among popular online destinations for TV content – Hulu, Netflix and YouTube – Hispanics were most likely to watch video on Netflix, while Asians were most likely to watch on Hulu and black viewers on YouTube. Interracial & Interethnic married couples grew by 28% since 2010.

The U.S. Census Bureau released a 2010 Census brief, Households and Families: 2010 , that showed interracial or interethnic opposite-sex married couple households grew by 28 percent over the decade from 7 percent in 2000 to 10 percent in 2010. States with higher percentages of couples of a different race or Hispanic origin in 2010 were primarily located in the western and southwestern parts of the United States, along with Hawaii and Alaska. U.S. Communications Industry expected to Outpace projected U.S. Economic Growth in 2012.

Driven by an improving economy and stronger-than-expected results across all digital media, total U.S. Communications Industry spending increased 4.2% in 2011 and is on pace to grow at an accelerated 5.6% in 2012, reaching $1.185 trillion and outpacing GDP growth of 4.4%, according to Veronis Suhler Stevenson (VSS).
